Are you a frequent traveller?

Always travelling from place to place feeling stressed and wondering if you’ve packed the right clothes in your suitcase?

I was at a conference in Iceland last weekend and thought about this. The constant fear of not having what you need and knowing exactly where it is…but at home.

All you long for is to have this fixed so you always have it. I can tell you now, with a little planning, this is possible. Let me tell you what my client Laura did and you can do exactly the same.

Laura had a senior position at a large company. She was very good at her job. She travelled a lot and she never knew where her clothes were. She was a little ashamed because she had such a high position in her company so she thought she had to be organised to coincide with her high position at her job.

Laura lives a rather busy life. She’s away on business for a few days, home for a few days and then off on her travels again. And sometimes, she never really knows if she’s got the right stuff with her or not.

With the little time she had at home, she wanted to spend quality time with her kids and not worry about what she was going to pack for her travels.

So she went off with chaos in her suitcase and it sucked so much mental energy out of her. She felt disorganised and out of energy.

Packing was not her thing and she stated that very clearly with me. She bought travellers kits in the hope of making this process much easier.

But all this did was add even more stress and more things to think about.

More ‘stuff’ in her life that she didn’t know what to do with.

That was until we discussed some alternative ways to organise her suitcase ready for travelling and eliminate all of the stress. She followed a three step process to get ready for her travels:

Step One

She made a list of all the basic items she needed on her trips.

  • Clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Shoes

Step Two

She then organised them into categories.

Laura travelled 2-3 times a month (sometimes more) so she decided she’d buy 3 sets of everything. She bought 3 of everything from her list and made up three suitcases.

Step Three:

In each suitcase, she placed a memo of the additional ‘stuff’ she needed like her passport and computer for work related activities.

She set a time in her agenda so she’d have the time to get her stuff together on time. This meant when it came time to leave on her travels, she was prepared and ready with all the basics packed.

No Stress. No Worries.

A few months later, she called me and told me how ridiculously easy it was to do. It’s so important to be prepared.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Most people never create themselves a system which they can stick to and stay organised.

Once you realise the importance of organisation and planning, your life will become stress free.
