Sometimes it can feel like stress has the upper hand on us. If you’re a business leader stress is something that you’re going to come up against at times. But there are some simple and easy ways to harness stress and keep it under control. Now, if you know me, I’m always talking about treating stress on a deeper level. There’s no such thing as a ‘quick fix’.

But today, I’d love to share with you 3 quick tips to use as a temporary fix when you’re in moments of stress. Just remember, these tips won’t cure stress 100% but they will give you a much needed sense of relief.

Let’s take a look at my three best tips…

One: Breathing

I’m sure you’ve heard of this. Taking a couple of deep breaths when you’re either in moments of stress or when you feel stress coming up can help keep you calm. Take a deep breath in, hold it for a moment and then release. Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Two: Walking

It doesn’t have to be a long walk but just getting out doors can be a great stress reliever. Even just a couple of minutes away from your desk can have a great effect on reducing your stress levels.

Three: Smile

This is my favourite of the three! It’s simple, it’s free and it’s easy. There’s nothing better than a smile to relieve stress. If you’re stressed out, go and speak to somebody and simply smile. You’re going to feel great! Smiling is contagious. You don’t even need to find someone to talk to (although I would recommend it). If you’re alone, all you need is a mirror. Smile back at yourself. Don’t have a mirror? Take a picture on your phone and see yourself smiling.

Over to You

Let’s just recap on my 3 favourite tips for reducing stress in the moment:

  1. Breathing – Deep breaths in through the nose out through the mouth
  2. Walking – Even if it’s just a short walk away from your desk
  3. Smiling – Simply smile. Go find a friend, mirror or your phone
