Are you getting stressed out and not realizing that is what´s happening?
Seeing signs that you don’t realize is your stress?
It creeps up on you, slow and nasty before it then hits you when it is too late.
Stress is not all the things on your to-do list. Stress is the reaction in your body and mind when your perceived demands from the outside is contrasting with what your inner power can handle.
This shows in many different signs and symptoms that we often have a hard time to understand. And all this is spiced with feelings that are even harder to control.
Here are the 5 biggest signs to look out for that are telling you, you’re stressed out:
Have you ever had one too many glasses of wine because you’re so stressed out? Well, you’re not alone.
You know, it’s really fairly common among business leaders that they drink too much alcohol. One day when you’re stressed out you realise:
“OK that glass of wine did feel good. I felt much calmer. I felt like this is much better than taking pills because taking tranquilizers, no that’s not for me. I’m not that kind of person. I don’t eat pills.”
Today I want to talk about sleep.
You know life on earth is adapted to the rotation of our planet, and we have known for many years that we, as humans, have clocks that work with this regular cycle of the the planet turning around itself. So we have these body clocks but how does it work? That’s not something that we’ve really known. I’m from Sweden and in Sweden we have the Nobel Prize, I’m not sure you know about it but here it’s a big thing and I usually hear about it every year and there are all these prizes for scientists who’ve done things that most of us don’t understand.
Some of my clients are not sure they have the right job, they don’t feel the right connection to it and that can be very stressful. Have you ever felt like that? A disconnect?
Or maybe you are like the ones that tell me that they are perfect for the job and they really don’t know why that is either, they haven’t got the key of “What is it that makes me perfect?” or “What is it making me not like my job?”
The other day I was reminded of a guy whose name is Antonovski. He is a professor in medical sociology and he has created a term called Salutogenesis; it’s a hard word which means to look at what keeps us healthy instead of looking the other way around, the way that health care usually does where they usually are looking at what makes us ill.
Many of my clients complain that they have such a big workload and that there’s always more to do than what they have time for. They ask themselves: “How on earth will I get through the day?”
They say: “I’m not taking on anything else. Isn’t anybody else working in this place?”
They ask: “Where shall I start?”
And that’s the critical question. Where shall I start?
I often get questions from my clients about fitness and physical activity; they get stressed out because they don’t have time to do all that fitness work that you are supposed to. At least if you listen to all the other people they feel there is a lot of “have to do” or “must do”, and they feel guilty because they don’t. Also they might not even like the fitness work. Doing things because you “have to” is not a good driving force.
It would become something you avoid for as long as possible, it becomes like a chore and it won’t benefit you. At this point you have to find ways that spark your interest and motivate you. Also if you understand what’s going on then it’s much easier to do things that you don’t really like because you feel it’s a bore but you can cope with it because you know it’s good for you. .
I know a lot of lady business leaders who are not into sports at all….
Many of my business leader clients feel that they are overweight and they want to lose a couple of kilos or pounds. They are dreaming of their perfect life with the perfect weight, the perfect dress that they’re gonna wear and their perfect stress free life that they’re going to have when they have the ideal weight.
They think about weight loss all the time and most of them have tried dieting, at least five different diets. And they get no results, they’re just bouncing up and down the scales, they are constantly hungry or they are constantly feeling bad because they are conscious of everything that they put in their mouth.
And they ask me if it’s even possible to lose weight without doing this specific type of dieting and I tell them, yes it is, but first we have to look at:
I asked my clients what is your biggest hurdle in your work life?
Most of them answered with exactly the same thing and that is that there is just so much to do!
This problem is most definitely in everyone’s top three hurdles.
Not only did they tell me that there was so much to do but also that there is so little time. They said “imagine if I had the right amount of tasks for the time that is given. That would be great life, but that’s not what it looks like.”
And when I heard that I have just wished I could be a magician and fix more time for people.
But as you know now that’s not possible, time is a fixed thing and we all have the same amount and we have to organize our life in the different ways instead.
However, there are other ways to get around this problem……
Have you ever had a vacation where you were hoping for some rest but it didn’t turn out that way.
Instead of relaxing you got it all spoiled by all the obligations that you had on your mind. Things that you couldn’t stop yourself doing because you thought that they just had to get done, and so you couldn’t control yourself. I bet you have.
Let me tell you about my summer. We have a summer house by the coast and there is a very nice beach very close to it where you can just walk down and take a swim in the ocean. I love this place, it’s so soothing and relaxing to be here. That moment when I get out of the car in the parking lot I feel my shoulders just totally relax. It’s definitely my happy place.
Imagine the perfect workday: Everything goes smoothly, you reach your goals and everyone is very content with what comes out of it. Your clients are just amazed by what you’re doing and there is no complaints at all.
But that’s not how it is really, right? You get so stressed out because you never reach your goals and there is always someone who hasn’t done their homework, someone who hasn’t done their deal and you feel you’re just struggling with people who don’t care about what they’re supposed to do.
They don’t reach their deadlines and when they don’t get their deadlines, you don’t get your deadlines. And you are the one that is responsible for it, it’s kind of your fault. Or at least that’s the feeling you get.
